ABOUT CAST ADHD

CAST ADHD is symptom tracking process completed by patients after they are diagnosed with ADHD and before they start a medication. It was developed by Dr. Aaron Winkler, MD,founder and former director of the Stanford Adult ADHD Clinic. CAST ADHD supports clinician diagnostic comfort and accuracy, is only available to patients/clients through their diagnosing clinician, and is free of charge. Clinicians can use CAST ADHD with their patients/clients after attending a one-hour remote orientation, also free of charge. To sign up for an orientation, please complete this form.

Using CAST ADHD patients/clients spend 10 days tracking their current symptoms of ADHD after diagnosis and before starting medication. Their diagnosing clinician plays a 10 minute instructional video for them at the conclusion of their first appointment or provides an access code to view the instructions after the appointment. Following these instructions, they track symptoms in plain text on their phone for 10 days. The results are forwarded to the clinician using the clinician's HIPAA complaint messaging portal.

No personally identifiable patient information is ever requested or captured on the CAST ADHD website. Clinicians who use CAST ADHD have reported that this process provides powerful insight into a person's reality of ADHD symptom burden; simplifying the choice about whether to start a medication, altering the experience of starting medication for those who choose to do so, and improving both short-term and long-term adherence to taking medication as prescribed. For clinicians, the process provides evidence of patient engagement, documentation of current symptom burden, and clarity around the presence or absence of comorbidities. Formal clinical research is currently taking place to ascertain effect sizes of the changes reported by clinicians. If you would like to participate in the RCT that is currently underway sign up for CAST ADHD orientation.
